Some weeks ago I wrote a piece decoding the present day republicans. Many of my readers responded by asking me what should the democrats do in the face of this reality. My answer is five fold:
1. Continue to rally the country behind pass the Jobs bill. With each passing day, more and more details of the impact on the local and state level should be spelt out. Chris Mathews on Hardball has set an example - he lists all the unrepaired and dangerous bridges in each state the president goes to.
2. Accept that republicans will not pass part or total of the bill and use every part of executive power to bolster the jobs situation. Every week a cabinet member needs to take to the airwaves to indicate the cost of delay and its impact on the jobs situation.
3. Accept that the supercommittee will fail and the automatic cuts will ensue. But implementing the cuts will be in the hands of the executive agencies. They should even now begin to target republican areas so that the hurt is immediate and deep. The lobbyists will pick these vibes early and start pushing the concerned republicans to move.
4. File suits against all the state government republican attempts to curtail voting rights and take it to the supreme court. Let this be a fight all next year. Ask each senator/rep/governor whether he agrees with the attempt to limit voting rights.
5. Continue the ground roots effort of 2008 but quietly without fanfare.
