Everyday my long suffering daughter in law struggles to feed milk to my grandson. Normally cheerful and full of smiles, the thought of drinking milk curdles his happy and peaceful disposition.
He closes his eyes hoping the milk and the milk bearer would just dissappear. When that does not happen, he covers his ears ( I dont know why the ears, he does not drink from them. Perhpas it is not hear the siren calls of his mother?) but anyway he covers them. Then when that fails, he purses his lips and moves his head from side to side so as to not present an easy target for the spoon filled with milk. When even that fails, he refuses to look up figuring out correctly that if his mouth is facing downwards, the milk cannot travel down his throat!
Alas, all these struggles and strategies and normally to no avail. And his mother aided by his father generally prevail. As he will tell you that is not fair - two big galoots against one tiny baby!
Mama is trying to sweet talk me into drinking my milk
Then she mobilizes grandma to help
And even the other grandma - thats not fair
No means No !
Finally the big compromise! "OK OK I will drink it but let me go after that will you?"Here is another mother with the same problems: "He fights every single formula feed, he hates it! He constantly takes his head away and cries, i have to make a lot of noise and jig up up and down to get him to take it! Once he's latched on, after a minute or two he stops fighting and drinks but its such a fight and very stressful! Not to mention embarrassing!! Also i am the only one who can feed him too!! So thats stressful too!! He is also very constipated!! Have to use suppositorys after 72hrs of no poop or he stops eating and drinking altogether!! Have tried different teats, etc, no joy. He takes his water from the same bottles no problems. His milk has been changed from SMA Gold to Aptamil easy digest to normal Aptamil with a thickener and back to Aptamil easy digest. Its driving me INSANE!! I cant possibly feed him in public and it stresses us both out! And my partner because he wont take it from him at all!! I have been to the doctors about it and they say some babies just need distracting! Which i dont agree with, and then was prescibed suppositorys! I have seen 3 different docs about it too! It driving me nuts! Feel like going down there and making them feed him!! "
This scene reminds me of an old ditty:
"I do not love thee, Dr Fell,
Substitute milk for Dr Fell and you get the picture.
